Scout and Explorer
Fishing Competition Saturday 19th June 2009
Although only 4 Scouts and 2
Explorers turned up to take part in the above competition arranged by Keith and
James Burkert, what a fantastic day they all had and what a volume of fish were
caught.
The sun shone and the pond at
Brockamin was beautifully clear and clean with a wealth of wildlife to be
spotted, including a mink, ducks, moorhens and even a domestic chicken who took
a great liking to some of the bait boxes alongside the pegs!!!
Both Scouts and Explorers were
competing for prizes (and badges) and a good hearted banter between anglers took
place. There were three prizes up for grabs, the biggest catch overall (weight
wise), the largest fish caught and the largest number of fish caught. Also
during the day the anglers were tested on their knowledge of fishing which built
on that gained earlier in the year when they attended a fishing training day.
All Scouts have now achieved their Scout Angler Badge and the 2 Explorers have
completed their Physical Recreation Angler badge.
The overall winners were Charles from
8th Inca Troop with the largest weight catch - totalling 20lb 8 oz having
bagged 29 Perch, 5 Roach, 1 Bream, 5 Common Carp and 1 Common Carp Ghost.
Adam from West Explorer Unit –
catching the largest fish – a Carp at just over 4lb.
A final prize went to Jack from 10th
Worcester, who had previously told me he had not fished competitively before but
still managed to catch 94 fish altogether. These were made up of 1 Hybrid
Roach/Bream, 82 Perch and 11 Roach.
The total number of fish caught
during the day was 193 comprising 3 Rudd, 1 Hybrid Roach/Bream, 143 Perch, 28
Roach, 4 Bream, 12 Common Carp and 2 Common Carp Ghosts.

Well done everyone who attended and
thanks to James and Keith Burkert who arranged both the instruction day and
today’s fishing competition, Alan Hayden and John Benjamin from Fellowship for
helping to walk the bank and Andrew Jenkins 16th SL for assisting likewise.
Also a big thank you to Allen’s Fishing Tackle of St Johns for allowing us to
use their excellent facility at Brockamin.
The photographs below give you a
“flavour” of the day.
